Grade changes the visual character of a hardwood floor even when the species and color stay the same. Character and Select are not simply “lower” and “higher” versions of one another; they create different design outcomes.
What is Character grade?
Character grade generally allows more visible natural variation, including a broader range of grain, color movement and natural features. The result can feel warmer, more organic and less uniform from board to board.
What is Select grade?
Select grade is chosen for a cleaner, more controlled appearance with less visible variation. It is often preferred when the goal is a calmer field of wood that does not compete with cabinetry, stone or furniture.
Which grade looks more expensive?
That depends on the design. A highly refined contemporary room may benefit from a cleaner grade, while a material-driven interior may intentionally use knots and natural variation as part of the design. Grade should support the architecture rather than be judged only by uniformity.
Does grade change color?
The finish color may be the same specification, but natural grain and variation can make Character and Select versions read differently across a full room. This is one reason small product photos should not be the only basis for a decision.
